Green Keepers Blog – Typical weather for May

May was a roller coaster of a month for grass growth. Overnight frosts at the start, followed by a pickup in temperatures, coupled with some warm rainfall bringing us our much needed burst of growth helping to aid recovery to our worn areas. The second half of the month we saw very little rainfall so moisture levels fell on the non-irrigated areas and therefore the burst of growth was relatively short. A good balance of  weather has provided us with great opportunities to carry out varied tasks to improve the quality of all surfaces, see below:-

Statistics

Rainfall for May 2016 = 96mm/ nearly 4 inches

LAWN TIPS
If you still have strong grass growth, then it’s a good time to apply those selective weed killers to your lawns (as long as you follow the manufactures instructions). If your grass growth is slowing the moisture levels may need topping up over the next few weeks if the dry spell continues…

OTHER INFO DO YOUR BIT
Help minimise the wear and tear by avoiding taking your trolleys/buggies to close to the greens & tees.

PLEASE – REPAIR ALL PITCH MARKS.
‘A pitch mark left unrepaired for 10 minutes or longer takes 15 days to recover, whereas a pitch mark repaired within 5 minutes recovers completely within 24 hours.’
